Reading: From Post-its to Processes- Using Prototypes to Find Solutions

This week we have some lectures and workshops to understanding what is prototyping and how we could process it.

In general, designers need doing prototyping before processes a program. Because using prototyping is helping people broader their mind and gain more ideas. Talking about using prototypes, there are several things need to be prepared before the work. First thing is get everyone/ themselves become interactions. A good attitude and comfortable mind is really important for designers, when they get into a design process. People need get as many ideas as they can; not matter the quality of the idea, just quantity. Therefore, they could have something to choose, and make it better. There is a key rule designers need keep in mind: Do Not Judge Your Idea!

Secondly, designers need get enough space to doing their program. As image1 illustrated on the below. People need spread out their works out physically, then they could let the others to look and suggest for their work. For the designers themselves, it is giving them space to think about their own concept and make some promotion.

The third thing people need prepare before a prototype is offering some inspiration materials. “Whenever potable, establish a dedicated space with arts and crafts supplies. “(2014,April) described on the article: The Annual Conference of Museum and the Web. A mess and full of arts room allows  designers obtain many inspirations and it is easy for their colleagues to see and offering some feedbacks.

With all these prepare, designer(s) could begin their prototyping.

People need understand three phrases when they doing a prototype.

There are three levels to distinguish prototype and process. First and foremost is Low-Fidelity prototyping, which is the primary prototype. As Low vs. High Fidelity Prototyping Debate in Interactions Magazine displayed:”Low-fidelity” prototypes are generally limited function, limited interaction prototyping efforts. They are constructed to depict concepts, design alternatives, and screen layouts… These prototypes are created to communicate, educate, and inform.” It do not need well drawing and so many words, Just using few key words and simple drawing to record the idea, is enough for initial prototype. And as I understand, “Low-fidelity prototypes is great for designers to come up ideas and to record them. Generally, Low-Fidelity could be understand as “Just-Good-Enough-fidelity” Prototype, however, the “Just-Good-Enough-fidelity” Prototype make audience and customers understand the program much easier than the “Low-Fedlity”. And using a “Just-Good-Enough-fidelity” Prototype to present to target customers, designer could gain some useful feedbacks. Finally is the “High-Fedlity” prototype, it is more complicate than the “Low-fidelity” prototype and the “Just-Good-Enough-fidelity” Prototype.  Regarding “High-Fedlity” prototype,there possibly with many details. It looks more like a ‘final work’ rather than a prototype. If designers showing their ideas in that way, their are barely to get any feedbacks, because the target audience possibly feel the work is too good to change.

To summary, designers need fully prepared and have a clearly mind to do the prototyping. Do more practice of that skill is significantly as well.

So, everybody, why not beginning to doing a prototype right now?
