WEEK 31: REPORT DRAFT- SMART CITY DESIGN PROCESS

Report: the illustrated report of my working process of the smart city project.

In this project, we are going to envision the possible near futures for a range of systems in our urban environments. My topic i about fitness application and wearable devices. It is a system that creates amount number of debates in contemporary society.

The progress based on a serials secondary research, which includes the history of fitness devices, the diversity function of the health-care applications and the technologies that used on the system. In the mean time, I am also collecting some initial databases by doing questionnaire and some self-experimental. With these researches and tests, I found some issues that fitness devices system caused to human beings. For instance, the miss calculating of the steps, I try to use the fitness application in my smart phone to monitor my daily walking steps, however, it not record it accurate. It inspired me to create an ‘evil video’ to illustrates how could users to trick their health-care devices.

After that, I am thinking to improve the flaw by using the driver of change. In this project, the driver of change could be the function. Firstly, is to create Eco-cities (Image 1). In the second place, it is significantly to resolve the loss of privacy (Image 2). Therefore, I come up with two ideas. The first concept is about to create a fitness device that could transfer the energy from user activities to the power to charge for the device. And the second idea aims to encourage people to do exercise and offering them privacy in the same time. As Poole (2014) points out on the Guardian “It is the city not with smart phones, but with publicity funded sports facilities and a cable car connecting them to the city.” It means in the future, the target is to create an environment friendly and user-friendly city, with high quality public lives. Therefore, I deem that the second idea works more coincidence to the definition about smart city and keep develop it.

The final result named ‘Mirror Mirror’, which looks like an application on a mirror (Image 3&4). The concept inspired from shadows. Due to the development of economics, people become busy than before. Daily Mail (2008) indicates “University of Bristol researchers found that people’s general mood improved on days of exercise but they became less calm on non-exercise days.” It means doing exercise could make human beings keep healthy. The BBC news reports (2006), ‘according to the British Chiropractic Association, People who work in offices are among the most likely to suffer from back pain’. Base on these two news, it is clearly shows that amount number of office worker are lack of exercise, and high potentially face to a threat of their health. My idea is to set up a fitness device that could helps office worker to keep their health without spend a bunch of time. It could let them to do some fundamental exercise inside their home or office. The application could recognize human beings once they are stand in front of the mirror. Users only need scan their fingerprint on the ‘Mirror Mirror’, then, they could do the fitness everywhere with the device. The office worker could use only 5 minutes to do some exercise before go to work or even in the office.

To sum up, my system is to helps users who might encounter a bad living habit but would like to live in a healthy life. It lets exercise become more flexible and convenience.
